In the pharmacy, we see it every autumn
Between September and November, consultations regarding hair loss increase significantly. The first thing we usually explain is that not all hair loss means alopecia. Hair has a cycle, and during certain times, we may notice more hairs in the shower, the hairbrush, or on the pillow. Stress, an insufficient diet, hormonal changes, a recent illness, or certain medications also play a role.
Our advice is to observe the pattern. Diffuse hair loss over a few weeks, without bald spots or symptoms on the scalp, may be transient. However, if patches of hair loss, intense itching, significant flaking, pain, loss of eyebrows, or very sudden and sustained hair loss occur, it deserves professional evaluation. It is also advisable to consult if it lasts for more than two or three months.

Before buying an anti-hair loss product, look at the scalp
A common mistake is focusing only on the hair and forgetting where it grows from. If there is dandruff, excess oil, irritation, or itching, the scalp must be cared for first. At the pharmacy, we can help you distinguish whether you need a frequent-use shampoo, an anti-dandruff treatment, or a specific product.
In the Pasteur catalog, we find, for example, Dercos Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for oily hair. It can be a good option when hair loss coincides with dandruff and itching, because the goal in that case is not to "make the hair grow" immediately, but to improve the condition of the scalp. The product information recommends a treatment phase followed by maintenance use.

If there is no dandruff or irritation, it makes no sense to use an anti-dandruff shampoo just because you are losing hair. We choose the product based on the problem we see, not to accumulate treatments.
What about supplements?
Hair supplements can be useful when there is a nutritional need or during certain stages, but they should not replace an assessment if the hair loss is striking. Iron, zinc, vitamin D, biotin, proteins, and other nutrients contribute to healthy hair, but supplementing "just in case" does not always provide a benefit and, in some cases, can be counterproductive.
If, in addition to hair loss, you notice marked fatigue, paleness, weight changes, very heavy periods, or have followed a very restrictive diet, it is better to discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. It may be more useful to look for the cause than to buy the most complete supplement on the shelf.

Our Pasteur advice
For a few weeks: treat your hair gently, avoid constant pulling, reduce the use of flat irons or excessive heat, and use a shampoo adapted to your scalp. You don't need to wash it less to "prevent it from falling out": the hairs you see when washing were already at the end of their cycle.
And be patient. Hair responds slowly, sometimes taking up to 3 months. Changing products every seven days makes it impossible to evaluate anything. If you use an appropriate cosmetic treatment or supplement, give it the indicated time and monitor the progress.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does washing my hair every day make it fall out more?
Not necessarily. Washing removes hairs that had already detached from the follicle. The frequency should be adapted to your scalp.
Is an anti-hair loss shampoo enough?
It can be part of the routine, but if there is a medical or nutritional cause, it does not replace it.
When should I consult?
If clear areas without hair appear, hair loss is very intense, there are symptoms on the scalp, or the problem persists for several months.
