At the pharmacy, we start with the symptoms, not the product
- Stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Fever
- Fatigue…
In autumn and winter, many respiratory infections look the same at the beginning. A cold usually causes more nasal symptoms and follows a progressive evolution; the flu can start more abruptly, with fever, muscle aches, and the feeling of being truly ill. However, the symptoms overlap, and we cannot always distinguish between them just by a list.

That is why our first piece of advice is simple: observe how you feel as a whole. Rest, stay hydrated, and treat only the symptoms you actually have. Taking a preparation with five active ingredients when you only have congestion is usually not the best strategy.
Combined medications: useful, but you must read what they contain
At Farmàcia Pasteur, we stock products for cold and flu symptoms. When we recommend a combined preparation, we always review its components to avoid duplications. It is very common for a person to take a flu medicine and, without realizing it, later add another medication with the same analgesic, such as Paracetamol.
Tell us if you have hypertension, prostate problems, glaucoma, are pregnant, your age, and other treatments, because some decongestants or combinations may not be suitable. Write to us

If you are already taking medication, bring it or tell us exactly what you are using. Five minutes of review can prevent an unnecessary or counterproductive combination.
For the nose and throat
For mild congestion, saline washes can help and are a simple measure. For the throat, staying hydrated, avoiding smoke, and using appropriate local-action sprays or lozenges can relieve discomfort. If the pain is intense, there is difficulty swallowing, white patches, persistent fever, or worsening, the cause should be assessed.
Pasteur selection for congestion
Something similar happens with coughs: not every cough is treated the same way. A dry, irritating cough and a cough with mucus have different objectives. Before choosing a syrup, tell us what the cough is like, how long it has been going on, and if you have asthma or another respiratory illness.
Antibiotics are NOT for a common cold
Colds and flu are viral infections. Antibiotics do not work to treat viruses, and using them without an indication promotes resistance and adverse effects. If an infection requires antibiotics, a healthcare professional must decide.
It is also not necessary to “cut off” every symptom from the first minute. The goal is to feel reasonably well, rest, and monitor your progress.
